Part 2 -Fuel injection systems
Fuel injection systems are used in modern automobiles to deliver fuel to the engine. They replace the older carburetor systems, which were less efficient and produced more emissions. Fuel injection systems are more precise, allowing for better control of the air/fuel mixture in the engine, resulting in improved fuel economy, better performance, and reduced emissions.
Single-Point or Throttle Body Injection (TBI):
In this system, a single injector is located in the throttle body, and fuel is sprayed directly into the incoming air. TBI systems are simple, reliable, and less expensive than other types of injection systems, but they are less efficient and less precise.
Port Fuel Injection (PFI):
This system injects fuel into each cylinder through a separate injector located near the intake valve. PFI systems are more precise and efficient than TBI systems, but they are more complex and more expensive.
Direct Injection (DI):
In this system, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, rather than into the intake port or throttle body. DI systems provide even better fuel economy and performance than PFI systems, but they are more complex and require higher fuel pressures.
Sequential Fuel Injection (SFI):
SFI systems are similar to PFI systems but are timed to deliver fuel in a specific sequence to each cylinder. This improves engine efficiency and power delivery.
Common Rail Injection:
This is a high-pressure fuel injection system used in diesel engines. In this system, a high-pressure pump delivers fuel to a common rail, which then distributes fuel to each cylinder through individual injectors.
Fuel injection systems use various sensors, such as the oxygen sensor and the mass airflow sensor, to determine the correct air/fuel ratio for optimal engine performance. The electronic control unit (ECU) receives data from these sensors and adjusts the fuel injection rate accordingly. This precise control of the fuel injection process leads to improved fuel economy, reduced emissions, and better engine performance.
